A mudra is a symbolic gesture that can be made with the hands and fingers or in combination with the tongue and feet. The word mudra comes from the Sanskrit root mud, which means “delight or pleasure.”
Although new to the Western world, mudras have been used in the East for centuries to enhance physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. Taoists in ancient China used them to find inner peace; Indian mystics used them to attain samadhi (enlightenment), and healers have used them to heal everything from headaches to arthritis.
Mudras work because they stimulate the flow of healing energy, prana/chi, through specific energetic centers in the subtle energy system. By stimulating these points for extended periods of time, usually for five minutes or more, it’s possible to both enhance and integrate the flow of prana and/or chi between the subtle field and the physical-material body.
Both Ayurvedic medicine and the science of Acupuncture recognize that each area of the hand corresponds to a certain area of the body and the subtle energy field that interpenetrates it. By using mudras either alone or with other exercises, it’s possible to stimulate different parts of the physical-material body and subtle energy field.
Contemporary scientific research indicates that the tip of each fingers contains more than 4000 nerve endings. It’s by stimulating these nerves and the corresponding organs of the subtle energy system that mudras can enhance spiritual and physical well-being.
Mudras are so flexible that you can practice them at work, at home or even waiting for a bus.
As the threat of Covid recedes and you once again make the transition to a normal lifestyle, mudras can be very useful. I’ve chosen three mudras that will help you make the transition as smooth and joyful as possible.
The Fearless Mudra
The Fearless Mudra is designed to overcome patterns of fear that block your access to your subtle energy field. By using the Fearless Mudra to banish fear in all its forms, you will liberate vast amounts of prana and chi in your subtle energy field that may have been blocked during the pandemic. That will enhance your ability to experience pleasure, love, intimacy and joy.
You can use the Fearless Mudra as part of your regular regimen of energy work or whenever fear interferes with your daily activities. As part of your regular regimen, it’s best to practice the mudra every day, in a quiet place, for ten minutes.
To perform the Fearless Mudra, find a comfortable position with your back straight. Then bring your tongue to your top palate and slide it back until the hard palette curls upwards and softens. Once your tongue is in position, bring the soles of your feet together until they’re touching. The index fingers are brought together next so that the tips touch one another. After the tips of your index fingers are touching, bring the tips of your thumbs and the tips of your middle fingers together. Keep the tips of your index fingers above the tips of your thumbs and middle fingers. Then bring the tips of your ring fingers together and the tips of the pinkies together
Close your eyes and hold the mudra for ten minutes. Then release your fingers and bring your tongue and feet back to their normal positions.
The Inner Voice Mudra
The Inner Voice Mudra was designed to enhance your discernment and your ability to trust it. The Inner Voice Mudra will help you to determine whether the information you’re getting from government, pressure groups or the media corresponds the information you’re getting from your inner voice, which determines what is true vis-a-vis insight, intuition and discernment.
You can use this mudra as part of your regular regimen of energy work or whenever you need to enhance your creativity. Practice the Inner Voice Mudra every day, in a quiet place, for ten minutes. In a short time, you will feel your creative juices flowing again – and you will be able to manifest your creativity without disruption.
To perform the mudra, sit in a comfortable position with your back straight. Then place the tip of your tongue directly behind the point where your teeth meet your upper gum. Put the tips of your pinkies together next so that they form a triangle. Continue by putting the outside of your ring fingers together so that they’re touching one another from first to second joint.
Put the tips of your middle fingers together to form a second triangle. Then bring the outside of your index fingers together so that they’re touching from the tip to the first joint. Finally, overlap your thumbs so that the tips of your thumbs are touching your index fingers at a point between the second joints and your knuckles.
Hold the mudra for ten minutes with your eyes closed. Then release your fingers and bring your tongue back to its normal position.
Inner Peace Mudra
Inner peace will emerge from deep within you when movement stops and you can focus your mind on the joy that spontaneously radiates through your subtle energy field. The Inner Peace Mudra is designed to enhance your experience of joy and inner peace regardless of the stress and/or loss you experienced during the pandemic.
Practice the Inner Peace Mudra every day, in a quiet place, for ten minutes. In a short time, you will receive the benefits that the Inner Peace Mudra brings to you both internally and externally.
To perform the mudra, find a comfortable position with your back straight. Then place your left thumb on the acupuncture point on the inside edge of your right thumb, just below the nail. Place the inside tips of your index fingers together. Your middle fingers are curved inward and touching from the first to second joint. The pads of your ring fingers are touching up to the first joint. And your left pinkie is placed over the nail of your right pinkie from the tip to the first joint.
Hold the mudra for ten minutes with your eyes closed. Then release your fingers.
